Hm

I don't see a clean relationship between the first part of this sentence and the second half, perhaps because I'm not certain whose "social position" and whose "love and respect" is being referred to here.

The context is a soldier complaining about a new (aristocratic and female) commander. Or, for those of you who know The Rose of Versailles, it's the scene where Alain bitches about Oscar taking over command of the city guard.

身の程知らずもご愛敬だが、あんたの指揮で動かなければならない俺たちのメンツってものを考えたことはあるか。

Any suggestions? I can see the first part as "Love and respect, regardless of social position" and the second as "(but) did you think of the honor of the men who must follow your command?", but I can't see how to cleanly put them together.

ETA: How about "Social position has no bearing on love and respect, and did you think of the honor of the men who must follow your command?"?

ETA: "It might be amusing for you to forget who you are, but did you think of the honor of the men who must follow your command?"

This is a shortened version of the song. I'm still working on the Japanese translation, so any suggestions are more than welcome♥

... Yes, I'm translating from English. Run in fear.

"Louise" by Maurice Chevalier [1929 original]
(Words by Leo Robin
Music by Richard A. Whiting)

Wonderful! Oh, it's wonderful
To be in love with you.
Beautiful! You're so beautiful,
You haunt me all day through.

Every little breeze seems to whisper "Louise."
Birds in the trees seem to twitter "Louise."
Each little rose
Tells me it knows I love you, love you.

Every little beat that I feel in my heart,
Seems to repeat, What I felt from the start,
Each little sigh
Tells me that I adore you, Louise.

Just to see and hear you
Brings joy I never knew.
But to be so near you,
Thrills me through and through.

Anyone can see why I wanted your kiss,
It had to be
But the wonder is this:
Can it be true,
Someone like you could love me, Louise?

Anyone can see why I wanted your kiss,
It had to be
But the wonder is this:
Can it be true,
Someone like you could love me, Louise?

Louise

Louise

僕がどうして君のキスを欲しがったか誰でも分かる
そうなる運命だった
しかし不思議なものがこれ:
君のような人が僕を愛してくれるなんて本当なの?
Louise

You know, the funny thing about sitting down and doing a thorough translation of a script is that there are some bits which are just as awesome as you remembered, some even more awesome, and yet always some that you really wish you hadn't done. Sometimes, ignorance really is bliss.

Still, overall, Futari dake ga Waru is just as good as I remembered. <3 And Mariko's noir-ish monologues continue to make me love Masatsuka-S. Sometimes he really, really gets it right.

But I think I've had enough easy fun for the morning. Time to thrash at Scout some more. Or maybe I'll just write a very nice note to the cast and ask very politely for a script loan. *sigh*

Woops, I've let this slide. Many apologies. The sudden surge of activity on [livejournal.com profile] schlosseberbach has reminded me. The next bit, rough translation, of the Making of Eroica.

Okay, I swear I meant to finish this whole chapter before posting any of it here, but this first section had me biting my lip so hard I had to post it. I can just see her pulling her hair out over all the fan letters and going, "Why do I have to rationalize this? It's my.damn.comic!"

Also, I'd like to note here, since I haven't done so before, that these are really rough translations. When I finish I'll go back over and make corrections, fix discrepancies, and make it more natural flowing English (oh, GOD, the run-on sentences!).

The initial conception had the earl and the major 12 heads high )

---

I'm open for suggestions on better ways to translate "obasan", "ossan", and "ojisan". All words with "aunt, uncle, middle-aged" connotations, though ossan is rougher sounding. I just can't think of good, one-word translations that keep the same feel.
