Part I - Dawn on the Main
Chapter 5 - The Tragic Love of Alte Bridge
Although nearly home, Eliyahu stops. If he goes straight home, his family which worked so hard to get him nice clothes to wear will wonder what happened. He can't disappoint them. So he decides to go to Alte Bridge and watch the Main River pass by for a few hours until he calms down.
As he's standing there in the dark, he hears a voice call his name. Adelheid appears, dressed in men's clothing again. When he didn't arrive at the party, she questioned the gate men, who said he hadn't come. So she went to his house, where his family said he had left. She tried the servants again, and when pressed they admitted what had actually happened. It had been on her father's instructions. Her father locked her in the cellar before she could have too public of a fit, but she knew a secret way out.
Now Eliyahu hugs her so tightly she can't breathe and kisses her soundly. It gets colder, but he doesn't know what to do. He can't bring her home with him, and he can't go anywhere with her. She tells him to take her away; she doesn't want to go home. Caught in a quandry, he holds her close. Suddenly the city guards arrive, rounding up the pimps and whores working under and around the bridge. Eliyahu and Adelheid run, but are caught as well and taken to the city jail.

He because it would destroy her name if it were revealed that she'd been rounded up with whores while with a Jewish man. He sends word to his mother to come and identify him. Meanwhile, Adelheid questions him about his sister and learns about his past. Certain that his sister is in love with him, she asks him to reassure her that he loves her, more than anyone.
