Chapter 3 - The Beauty Dressed as a Man

A description of the living conditions of the Jewish community, whose homes are crowded and nearly always in shadow. More despair from Eliyahu. Also, he's in a bit of disfavor with the community because of the rabbi having condemned him as a traitor.

His father decides to quietly take his son in as his assistant for the moment. If he becomes a personal financial manager or banker of an influential enough family, he could be allowed to live outside of the Jewish quarter. It's a faint hope, but it's a hope.

His father decides to start by introducing him to Friedrich Maximilian von Günderrode, a new client of Rothschild's. Along the way, more introductions to the laws of the times. His father has gone ahead of him, because it's dangerous for two Jewish men to be seen walking together outside of their quarter. Also, they walk along the edge of the carriage road, rather than on the walking path.

As they walk, Eliyahu sees a woman ride by, dressed in men's riding clothes. His father tells him that she's Adelheid, the only daughter of Johann Georg Funk. Her mother comes from the Günderrode family. Adelheid has just been betrothed to Moritz, heir of the Landgrave of Hessen-Kassel.

As Eliyahu is being presented to Günderrode, he sees an old Jewish woman walking down the middle of the walking path outside. He notices that her legs are both dragging, and for her to walk in the muddy carriage road would have been torture. However, some young men come riding up and run her over. Eliyahu ignores Günderrode and goes running out to stop them. He sends his father for his medicine bag and drags the woman inside the count's gate. But the count orders him out, not wanting Jewish blood on his flagstones. He sends some servants to throw them out. But Adelheid stops them, pointing out to her uncle that throwing injured people out of his house will reflect badly on his name. She even successfully argues against his protest that she's only Jewish.

A grateful Eliyahu meets her eyes, and the two exchange a speaking glance.

(Ack, these summaries are getting long. But I'm trying to stick to only the important bits. Like not spending two paragraphs talking about how lovely Adelheid apparently is. Her name shows up in book two, but is she really going to be a lasting love interest? I mean, if she doesn't show up after part I, that's going to suck for Nene.)
