Genji Book Club 3

Okay, so far we've got these preferences in abundance:
- Tyler's translation, unabridged.
- About 100 pages a week, so we'll choose our chapter quantity each week to fit as close to 100 pages as possible.
- Text chat is the overwhelming preference as well. My only worry is that with the lag for typing it might be pretty disjointed in group chat, but we'll give it a go! Does anyone object strenuously to AIM? Well, I use Trillian, but can connect to AIM that way, etc. Or any other preferences? (I like Kya's suggestion of posting the log of the chat up for people who missed that week.)
So, I'm thinking about an hour a week? Given the times everyone has given me so far, I'm tentatively going to suggest:
Saturday (or Friday) night 9-10 pm EST. That's 8-9 pm CST, 6-7 PDT, and 10-11 am Sunday Japan time. Kind of a grueling hour for the Europeans, and I'm not sure how keen the Nipponites will be to early morning hours. Also, inconvenient for those who prefer to dance the night away. Other suggestions?
And
kalen9 has offered to think deep thoughts for all of us help lead discussion.
To give people time to buy the book and things, we won't start for a couple weeks. I'm thinking, around the 30th or 31st? Or would that be too soon?
... Then I think in five years, when we finish, we should read the Kojiki. *grin*

Date: 2008-05-20 11:06 pm (UTC)Oh, I meant to ask you -- have you had a chance to mail the Valencia vid to Lucia? Or has the upload worked? I don't know if you got my other note about that a few weeks ago.

Date: 2008-05-20 11:40 pm (UTC)As for Valencia i just gave up on the upload yesterday so i put it onto a disk today and mailing it out tomorrow.

Date: 2008-05-20 12:54 am (UTC)DUDE. And then... and then... five years after, when we've barely covered the basics of classical Japanese, we can do it all over again in the original!

Date: 2008-05-20 04:38 am (UTC)Should we start a locked comm for transcripts and maybe any articles

Date: 2008-05-20 05:57 am (UTC)But it does sound like a fun initiative and I would have loved to see if my English would have been up to it. Maybe next book if you keep it up.

Date: 2008-05-20 09:46 am (UTC)Also, I can try to help lead discussion some weeks too.
When are we thinking of starting? Unfortunately I know of a couple of Saturday/Sunday morning commitments I already have in the next few weeks.

Date: 2008-05-22 02:07 am (UTC)Yay for leading discussion!
I mentioned the 30/31st up above, but that was just to throw out a date. If you've got plans, we could move it back another week.

Date: 2008-05-24 04:56 am (UTC)I've tried to get into the Tale of Genji before (once on my own and once for a class), and both left me with a distinct reaction of "the only reasonable response to this is "WHAT THE FUCK, GENJI?!?"...but I'm willing to give it a third try. XD
I might not be able to participate the first couple of weeks if you start it on the 31st, since my university library opens when the semester starts on June 10. But I'll definitely try after that! (also, Manila time is only one hour off Japan time, so 11-12 am Sunday my time sounds fairly reasonable to me...although it might run into family obligations...[/burdening you with too much info])

Date: 2008-05-25 02:38 pm (UTC)And, to be truthful, I hate Genji (the man) quite a lot. He's a rather useless lout. But the book itself is lovely.
I'm going to set the start date back a week, so you'll only miss the first meeting, which I suspect is going to consist of all of us wallowing around trying to figure out how exactly to do a book club on IM. I think (unless anyone strenuously objects) we'll also post the transcript.
I hope you'll be able to make it after that! :)
