Okay!

So, a couple requests to put off the start date, so I'll set it back one more week. And we had one mention that Friday night would be better, and one that Saturday would be. Since no one else seems to have a preference, I'd say Saturday is slightly better for me as well and tip the balance.

So we'll start on June 7th 9-10 pm EST.

kalen9 mentioned making a comm for us, and if she or someone else does that, I think it would be good to do a locked post with everyone's IM names in it. That way if we have trouble finding the chat room, other people will see us floundering about and invite us in. Speaking of which, what should we call the chat room?

I suspect whoever is going to lead the discussion should pick the chapters we'll be reading, but just to get things started, how does the introduction and then through to the end of chapter four (The Twilight Beauty / Yuugao) sound? kalen9?

Okay, so I'm a bit frustrated because I actually own a copy of the Royall Tyler version, only it's back in the states. I could buy a copy at Kinokuniya, but I'd rather not pay 3000 yen for a book I already have. Any idea if there's a text version of any of the translations online? I'm not a fan of piracy, but I think I have at least two or three copies back home.

Can I get back to you Monday/Tuesday? x_x I'm still in Kentucky right now; I just saw this on my cellphone and found someone's computer to borrow. Everything right now sounds fine but let me talk to you again when I'm in Chicago with the book. ^_^;

Edit: Yay comm. (http://community.livejournal.com/genjiclub/) I've invited everyone who commented on this post and added Jen as a maintainer as well; if I missed someone let me know. (Membership is moderated to keep strangers out, if we'll be putting up contact info and transcripts.)
Reading length looks great, and if you want I can try to get up questions ahead of time if people want to keep them in mind? I can't guarantee how early I can do that though; I'll be in finals then as well. (But reading period, which usually means massive procrastination.)

Edit2: Err... the copy I picked up from the library doesn't specifically say unabridged. Should this concern me? The four chapters take up about 80 pages.

Questions ahead of time sounds good, but, er, I don't want to be a procrastination enabler. ^^;; I've honestly never been in a for-fun reading group, so I'm just going to nod my head at everything you suggest. ;)

Yes, it clocks in at about 80 for me to. I figured if folks wanted to read the introduction as well, that's about 100 pages....

Great; you know what, I'll see if I can't get the questions (and the following reading selection?) up by the weekend before each session. Should work out best that way, I think, as long as I don't completely spaz out on scheduling work/school like I did this week.

Everything I've ever done for fun winds up looking a hell of a lot like school. :P So if I get too serious or dense feel free to whack me over the head with the fun stick. :)

Sounds fine. I admit I'll be pressed for time, since that's the week of finals, so if I don't finish the required reading, I apologize. ^^

Oh, and just to let you know, I'm going to be abroad for a few weeks over the summer. :( I'll have to miss a few sessions. Working this in with my schedule will be difficult, but I hate to pass up such a great opportunity, so I won't give in yet.

I don't think missing weeks will be a problem -- it's the summer, so I think most of us will be missing weeks for one reason or another!
